Before joining Zscaler earlier this year I was a networking guy. In fact, my entire career in IT was in some way linked to computer networking, over a 25-year period, and I thought I knew all about security. I was steeped in a world that defined security in terms of firewalls, VPNs, Network Access Control, and Intrusion Detection and Prevention. There were a lot of boxes, and a ton of complexity to work through. All that effort makes you feel like you must be secure, right?
Then I became a Zscaler employee. Suddenly my world was turned upside down. Rather than starting with the network, connecting people, and then attempting to lock everything down, I began to see another perspective altogether. Assume everything is insecure, remove all notion of implicit trust, and connect only what is permitted and secure. It was a revelation.
It was also the beginning of a journey. As anyone else who has made a similar transition, or started their cybersecurity journey will attest, there is a LOT to learn in this space. A lot of technology, and a mountain of new jargon. Fortunately, there are plentiful resources, no shortage of training courses and many helpful folks ready to share what they know, but here’s the thing. Here’s the big question on the minds of many in this situation:
Where do I start?
There’s no such thing as flicking a switch to transition from the familiar concepts of security (those firewalls and VPNs) to a zero trust architecture. It really is best thought of as a journey— both mental and practical. And as the old saying goes, every journey begins with a first step.
We want to provide that first step and make it easy for you to get started on this exciting journey because we recognize how badly the world needs more cybersecurity skills. We understand the burning need to transition to an architecture that’s purpose-built for a world where users and applications are anywhere and everywhere.
So we built a webinar and named it ‘Start Here: An Introduction to Zero Trust.’ And because we know the scale of the cybersecurity skills gap around the world, we consider it important enough to run every month. We also want to provide a live experience, with an opportunity to keep the content fresh, and for our audience to ask questions in real time, so we’re doing that too.
While there’s no way we can teach you all you need to know in one hour, we feel confident that you’ll find the hour you spent with us entertaining and informative. You’ll come away with a solid grasp of the basics so you can move on to more advanced topics, in line with your own goals.
Look for the next episode of our three part series, Zero Trust, From Theory to Practice, and book yourself a spot. If you can’t make it on the day, fear not. This one is like a regularly scheduled bus. It won’t be long before another one comes along, like I said, every month. We can’t wait to welcome you!
