As SaaS has been made popular by companies such as Salesforce.com, NetSuite, and Google/Postini, many security appliance vendors are claiming to have a SaaS service by placing their existing appliances in data centers. These products are designed to protect a single gateway of a single customer and are not suitable as a SaaS service. Zscaler has created a new standard for an in-the-cloud security service that is multi-tenant and delivers high-performance without introducing latency.

Zscaler is deploying its Distributed Global Security Network infrastructure in multiple data centers around the globe. Web traffic leaving the customer’s firewall is automatically redirected to one of Zscaler data centers, where user policy is enforced. Web pages returning from the Internet are inspected to ensure that only clean traffic is returned to the user. The Global Security Network is built upon three critical and patent-pending technologies:

Like Salesforce.com’s platform, Zscaler's platform was purpose-built to support a multi-tenant SaaS architecture. The policy and log management is centralized, but the execution of policy happens at Zscaler processing gateways that are deployed around the globe. Our multi-tenant architecture allow us to enable our internet gateways to handle multiple customers using a single instance of our infrastructure.
Each gateway can handle 250,000 transactions per second, which is 50-100 times the throughput of competitive proxy servers. Its Single-Scan, Multi-Action (SSMA™) technology ensures accurate application identification without introducing latency.
Zscaler’s NanoLog technology reduces web log size, without losing any information, by using a number of proprietary and patent-pending technologies, including differential data, indexing, and compression. These technologies deliver a 50-fold reduction in log size and provide high-speed access to search and retrieve web logs for analysis.
Zscaler’s proprietary technologies provide several benefits:
  • Rapid response time. Our Distributed Global Security Network minimizes traffic re-routing, while our high performance platform inspects Web traffic at a high speed. This minimizes latency and delivers rapid response time.

  • Reduced administrative overhead. Multi-tenant architecture allows us to handle thousands of customers on each gateway and reduces the administration of handling multiple instances of an application — making the SaaS delivery scalable and viable.

  • Consolidated reporting and data mining in real-time. NanoLog technology reduces log size, saving significant storage costs and providing high speed access for forensics and trend analysis.
