Internet access has traditionally been controlled using a URL filtering database, which consists of 15-20 million blacklisted URLs. But Web 2.0 is changing the nature of the Internet. Previously, only established organizations had web sites, and their web pages were fairly secure. Now, much of the content on the Internet is user-generated. Furthermore, traditional URL databases are actually domain databases, which cannot control to access specific URLs. Because so many pages are being created, the old approach of database tools is not sufficient.
Less than 20% of all Web sites are actually categorized by URL databases. That is not a number that should make you feel safe.

Zscaler has pioneered a new dynamic content classification technology. Every page being downloaded from a website is scanned on the fly at a very high speed, categorized, and handled based on company policy. Zscaler provides 80 pre-defined categories that are grouped into 30 super-categories. Super-categories are further grouped into 5 URL classes: security, legal liability, productivity loss, bandwidth loss, and business use.
  • Security — embedded viruses, spyware, and other malware

  • Legal Liability — adult, gambling, copyright infringement, hacking

  • Productivity Loss — games, shopping, job sites, online auctions

  • Bandwidth Loss — audio and video streaming sites
Organizations can also create their own categories and manage access based on keywords in URLs or page content. Zscaler allows organizations to create granular policies based on location, department, individual employee, and time and volume quotas. There are three options to manage access: allow, block, and caution. Furthermore, Zscaler provides the option of SafeSearch, which filters web, image, and video searches for Yahoo! and Google Search.
The reporting dashboard has extensive drill-down capabilities to provide businesses a full understanding of Internet use
  • View where different locations and departments going.

  • Breakdown Internet access by URL class.

  • Compare your statistics to industry peers.
Internet access is mission-critical, but it can be misused. By allowing users managed access, organizations can mitigate legal liability, increase productivity, eliminate bandwidth loss, and mitigate security risks. Zscaler can help organizations make optimal use of their resources, while providing secure Internet access.
